This was only the second time a gig had been played at this stadium, preceeded only by Bowie's fatefull 'glass spider' tour.
Anticipation was great...and the acts joining U2 on the bill were extremely well recieved,especially the 'home grown talent' of The Alarm....who to be honest could have been the headline act with the response they met.
U2 took to the stage at 8.45 to the track of Lennon's 'stand by me' with immense energy...which carried through the entire concert.
Edge was given an early introduction from Bono...saying 'Cardiff Arms Park means a lot to an Irishman..but it means even more to a Welshman like the Edge' which was met with a giant roar from the audience...Edge proceeded to futilely attempt to kick a rugby ball into the audience which hardly got off the stage...but the gesture captivated and stirred up an already enthusiastic audience.
A pretty standard Joshau Tree '2nd set' ensued..with Electric Co. bringing particular force (with bono pouring gallons of water over himself from the security pits) and 'Springhill Mining Disaster' being a special moment for a Welsh audience..as similar disasters had touched a nearby valley town in the decades before....songs such as 'Sunday' and 'Pride' got the stadium foundations bouncing again....and by the time the evening closed with '40' the city of Cardiff was ringing to its tune throughout the rest of the night....
