Even though I've been a U2 fan since they started out, this was only my third show. Stated simply, it ROCKED! Seeing the ingenious stage, elipse, and light show was alone worth the ticket price. My seat was near the top of section 113, and from up there the view was great and the sound was not overly loud, except for the enthusiastic cheering and singing. Their song selection was superb - a lot of their hard rocking classics mixed with plenty of their quieter, touching songs like One, Yahweh and 40. The band was full of energy, which transmitted to the audience. All night long the crowd showed their enthusiasm by singing along. I'm not going to go into the set list and say how much I liked the way each song was performed - they were all great. Bono and the guys very effectively demonstrated why they are the greatest band on Earth. They are the best song writers, they have the best lyrics, and they have the best melodies. AND they have a message - one of peace, love, and helping those who are in need.
The only dissapointment I have is that a city the size of Salt Lake does not have a large concert venue with better acoustics than the Delta Center. This is a problem in most cities - great bands like U2 having to play in noise boxes that have been designed strictly for sporting events, mainly basketball. It's a shame. However, the sound last night was still better than some other concerts I have attended there.
Bono is the most charismatic singer out there today, and his pulling people up on stage and getting them involved is pure fun to watch. Also, his voice was flawless last night. I wish I could meet the band in person some day to tell them how much their music has meant to me. I'm not a wealthy or important guy, so I will just have to continue enjoying them from the cheap seats. Toward the end of the show Bono and The Edge were out on the elipse singing near a woman holding up a large sign that simply said, "THANK YOU U2". My sentiment exactly - thank you U2 for all the great songs, and for all the ones that you will write and perform in the future. And please, keep coming back to our quirky little city. You are very much loved here.
