This is the first time I ever saw U2 live. I compare all U2 shows to the one in Hartford, so long ago. At that time, this show, in May 1987, was the greatest concert I ever saw! Many years - and over 150 concerts later, I still hold this show as my greatest concert experience ever. It was very spiritual to me - very religious! I still get goosebumps to this day thinking about it. At the beginning of the show, the lights went out and very faintly and slowly the chiming of Edge's guitar began on the left side of the stage - the opening notes of 'Where the Streets Have No Name'... as the sound reached it's crescendo the House Lights came on and there was Bono 'I want to run, I want to hide... I want to tear down the walls that hold me inside... ' and on and on... I was hooked , I was awestruck, I was wowed !! I remember during 'Bullet the Blue Sky' –
'And this guy comes up to me, His face red like a rose on a thorn bush
Like all the colours of a royal flush, And he's peeling off those dollar bills
Slapping them down, One hundred, two hundred, three hundred, four hundred, five hundred…..
As a man breathes deep into saxophone, And through the walls we hear the city groan
Outside is America, Outside is America, but tonight it’s Hartford, Connecticut!’
