Like Tom, this show was also my first stop on the Elevation Tour. Having heard quite a deal of Elevation shows past months, nothing beats to seeing them live this tour. And yesterday was the perfect night for that... amazing show, amazing crowd.
At the beginning it indeed seemed, as if Bono was experinecing some trouble with the high notes (later on in the show there was no evidence of that anymore), so that Edge helped him out a few times - every time in a great, true back up way. You can really sense the chemistry between all the members. This chemistry really grew great, when the now infamous 'Desire-medley' started off. But even just prior to that there was an inspiring moment when Bono took his time on the heart's runway, and explained the audience how "a great friend and great painter took his life yesterday..Herman Brood". He did go on about how they met when U2 performed for MTV awards in Rotterdam, about how he and Herman later on sat in a bar (Herman's bar here in Amsterdam "Cafe Dante"). Herman wanted Bono to tell him about the Bible, Bono reclined a little 'cause he thought Herman was "taking the piss out of him", "but", he added, "I will not think so anymore" And thus introducing a nice warm In A Little While. Bono hugged Edge and introduced the band briefly. When they just played a few notes of Desire Bono's attention was directed to a piece of paper held up for him from the tip. He started singing the lines from Hawkmoon 269 from that paper, switched back to Desire and in finishing the song Bono again read the small paper and started singing Running To Stand Still, while motioning Larry to get the drums going and Edge strumming the chords of the song. If it was up to me they could have gone on for even more, but Edge ended again after playing the lengthy snippet of RTSS with the ending of Desire.
The rest of the show was amazing aswell (MW-loud as f*ck, Bullet-the Mark Chapman rap-eerie) The Fly was great as expected and ended in a long delaying/decaying "gotta go" over the PA for a while into the encore break, kinda like the ending of Streets during Popmart.
Like Bono said at the end of the show: "We've played many dates in Germany, but it seems like something really went off in the house tonight!"
