The show was amazing in every sense of the word. For me, dad to a 7-year-old nutso U2 fan who desperately wants to see a concert this year, bringing the boy Jason on stage during "Sometimes" was the most emotional moment I've ever had at a U2 show. How I wished my son had been there to see it....
I had GA tickets but wanted to stay back and be able to take in the full production, and I also took the opportunity to walk around the upper levels a bit early in the show just to see what it all looks like ... beautiful, of course.
But you know all that stuff. So, two moments that also made this a special show that probably no one else saw:
1) I'm back near the mixing desk, and during "The Fly" I turn to look at Willie Williams. There he is, leaning over a bit with each hand reaching in a different direction to touch some lighting control or something -- looking like he's commanding the Starship Enterprise -- and bopping up and down, totally rocking out to the song. So cool to see that.
2) Same position, now it's "Mysterious Ways" when Bono and Adam are getting all playful. Adam is out on the tip and Bono is on the main stage calling him "sexy Adam" and Adam is making some moves since it's a dance song, of course. Bono heads out toward Adam and you have no idea what's next. The anticipation is rising. They dance together, back-to-back. You're wondering what they'll do next....
... and about 8 feet away from me inside the VIP area is Paul McGuinness smiling widely and standing on tippy-toes to see what's going on, which is cool to see in it's own right. But then as Bono and Adam start that little "duel" they did, McGuinness rushes up to the front edge of the VIP area so he can stand on a little platform and get a better view of this magical moment his boys are having on stage.
25 years of seeing his band and he still gets as excited as we do........
