It seems inadequate to call U2 a rock band. Their ability to unite and lift a place the way they did the Garden last night is too huge to assign them the simple status of rock band. What then do you call them? Evangelists? Apostles? That's too cheesy and doesn't do their soulful, rocking, skilled musicianship justice. I'll keep thinking about it awhile.
Got into the ellipse with some friends who'd never been to a U2 show. It was like being at a private party with the band, until you looked out over the ramp and saw 18k folks dancing and singing their heads off. Really incredible in there and makes general admission the only acceptable way to see the band forever more.
For the friends who'd never been, I was so psyched the boys put on such a fantastic show. The highlights for the cogniscenti, Fast Cars and Crumbs, didn't have the same impact on my pals as they did on me (lost my mind several times). But the generous helpings from Joshua Tree and really soulful One/Ol' Man River to close the first set left them with no doubt they had seen the best show of their lives.
Fired up for the long stand at the Garden and for some more shaking up of the set list to keep us guessing and rocking.
