The show I saw last night at Madison Square Garden was sublime. I had such a great time. The last time I saw U2 was on the Elevation tour in June, in Boston, and Bono obviously had some hoarseness and voice trouble (they still rocked anyway!). I was expecting more of the same this time around, and I was pleasantly surprised/absolutely blown away by how awesome he sounded! There was a point in "I Will Follow" live last night where he sounded exactly like the teenaged Bono in the recording. I got chills. And why isn't anyone mentioning the powerful, eerie performance of "Bullet the Blue Sky"? I had goose bumps the entire time. The guitar was just so creepy and the effect was amazing.
I'd always wanted to "sing this with me, this is 40" with the band ever since I heard Live at Red Rocks. And last night, they ended with 40: perfect! The whole crowd was singing long even after the band left the stage, one by one. It was beautiful. "Bad" was fantastic, and so were "Sometimes You Can't Make It.." and "Miracle Drug." And I just could not believe that he sang Pavarotti's part in "Miss Sarajevo." He totally nailed it and it sounded awesome. Just sublime.
Did anyone else notice that he appeared to have a Teleprompter? We were sitting at the back of the stage and could see words scrolling on a little device near the front of the stage. I thought that was funny :) He is getting up there! :) But WHAT A GREAT SHOW!
My only complaint is that I had to go all the way to NYC for the show because the tickets for Boston sold out and then were on eBay for like $800. Bastards!
