This show certainly had a different feel than when U2 came to Denver on April 6th, 2001. It had its rowdy points, but in general I felt the show was slower and more sentimental than Elevation’s first leg shows. The unique defining moment for the show occurred when a fan inside the heart held up a sign reading “All Along The Watchtower + Me”. Bono brought him on stage and declared “In America, It pays to advertise!” Bono, Edge and the fan played the first verse and then the Larry and Adam joined for the rest of the song. Reminded me of the old Rattle & Hum days!
I thought Bono would be more political than he actually was. During the South Bend webcast, he was rather adamant about Drop the Debt and third world poverty in the wake of 9-11-01. Bono really didn’t have much to rant about, but it was apparent that Please, What’s Going On, New York, and One were played with heavy hearts in light of America’s recent tragedies.
The Elevation opener always gives me the chills, which was even cooler preceded by The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” and “Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” on the PA. Another pleasant surprise was “All I Want Is You”, which was played in full.
You know U2 is incredible when they can drop marquee hits like “With or Without You”, “I Will Follow”, and “Mysterious Ways” from their act and still stage an impressive performance.
I’m looking forward to another treat in Vegas on 11/18/01 and the Elevation DVD two days later!
The goal is soul…
