I know reviews are a subjective thing. Two people can experience the same thing and have two completely different views on it. At any rate here is my review.
A long time U2 fan since the early 80's, I think this was my 16th time seeing them play live. I first saw them play on the Conspiracy of Hope tour at the L.A. Forum in 1986. The most amazing tour for me was the first leg of the Joshua Tree Tour though in 1987. That was a spiritual experience I will never forget.
Overall a HUGE thumbs up from me for U2's 360 Rose Bowl show. What an incredible night.
== Black Eyed Peas ==
The Black Eyed Peas turned up the energy and were a great opening act. They Rocked! They seemed appreciative and thanked U2 for the amazing opportunity. Fergie and the crew sounded great, singing on U2's amazing stage. Generous of U2 to let them use their giant 360 degree big screens too, to add to the 'wow' factor. The energy definitely went up with B.E. Peas but when Slash walked on stage and played the opening guitar riff notes to 'Sweet Child O' Mine' I knew the night would only get better and it did.
Now onto U2, for me personally I thought Bono's voice last night sounded a hell of a lot better then he did on the Vertigo tour. His voice has gotten stronger if that's possible.
== New Material from their latesst album ==
Their opening song was 'Breathe' which I like, but not their best opening ever. I loved hearing No Line On the Horizon whcih was my favorite tune hearing live that was from their new album. All their new material sounded great, but their classics were the highlight.
== Classic Song Highlights ==
'Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking' sounded remarkably fresh again. And the crowd was into it signing loudly while Bono stood back and listened to nearly the entire Rose Bowl sing that U2 classic.
'Unforgettable Fire' - amazing!
'Sunday Bloody Sunday' for me was the highlight of the show, hearing the opening ring of Edge's guitar and Larry's military drum beat sent chills up my spine. And listenig to Bono speak at the beginning of that song, I was seriously moved. I hadn't heard Sunday Bloody Sunday played like that since the 80's
'Where the Streets Have No Name' - my favorite U2 song...Always uplifting especially with Bono singing 'Amazing Grace' on the front of it.
The only downer for me was during One, when Bono asked the crowd to send a text message from their phones to join the One Campaign at one.org, but all internet access and phone access was blocked in the Rose Bowl. Completely riduclous. I can't remember exactly what Bono said after that but something to the effect of "you can text when you leave here" or "you can text when you go home" Definitely not the band's shining moment. But other than that, it was an absolutely amazing show and a very moving night.
Look forward to seeing them play in 2010
