My favourite and least favourite U2 gig I’ve ever been to. The bad luck started when I was out of the country when the tickets went on sale. I had to buy one from a “friend” at a highly inflated price.
My Dad was going through to Glasgow that day to visit relatives and offered me a lift but I would end up being dropped off at the SECC in mid afternoon. Not a problem. As we drove up to the venue, a white Merc (I think) drove alongside us with Edge and Adam in it. I got my Dad pull up there and then but by the time I got out of the car they had gone into the venue. A few minutes later, a second car drove up to the gates. In the back were Larry and Bono. Bono had his window open and stuck his hand out saying “Alright mate?” I just froze, starstruck. In my dazed way I must have looked like Mark Chapman or something and a security man put has arm on my shoulder saying “careful there”! The car drove in to the venue and I walked around the side of the SECC in a state of shock. I blew my chance of a quick chat or autograph. But worse was to follow. After the band had entered the venue, Bono had come back out and signed autographs for everyone waiting. I missed it, strolling around in my “look like a stalker” state. I spent the entire gig standing beside a guy with “Bono 92” signed on his t-shirt!
The gig? Superb as I remember. The band were late on having watched the Scotland v Russia game beforehand. Zoo TV indoors took some beating but my story really all happened pre-gig.
