I saw all 4 shows this year in Philly. The first 3 were great. This one was unbelievable. The setlist was high energy, the band was at their peak performance, and the crowd was in a frenzy. At the end of “Streets”, the crowd was so loud and for so long – Bono was gleaming and asked “is every Monday night like this?” The snippets of Patti Smith, The Who, The Beatles were great throughout the songs. At the end of snippet of The Promised Land, the crowd was yelling “Bruuuuuuce”, not knowing that was a prelude for what was yet to come. Bono’s intro to Miracle Drug about Edge landing in a spaceship from the future was a comedic and subtle way to make a point without preaching (the Edge says the future is better). Bono did an awesome job substituting for Pavarotti in “Miss Sarajevo”. When Springsteen appeared on the stage, the crowd went nuts – Bono was even amazed.
Then it came to the last song of the last encore. On the teleprompter we could see that “Bad” was going to be the song, one of U2’s best live songs and the song that we were dying to hear. Then it switched to “40”, which is still a great song but I saw it 3 times already. I also understand that “Original of the Species” was supposed to be played, which I think is one of the better songs from the new album. It may have been better that they did not play them because my head may have exploded.
I now have seen 11 U2 shows. This one was atleast the best since The Unforgettable Fire tour when I had 14th row on the floor of the Spectrum.
