The chapel was designed by Baccio Pontelli for Pope Sixtus IV in the mid-1400's with it's first mass being celebrated in 1483. It is the location of the Papal Conclave which is the event at which new popes are elected. It's famous ceiling was painted from 1508 to 1512 by Mchaelangelo under commission of Pope Julius II.
