And now, my life returns. Six shows in eight days - a whirlwind from Albany to Hartford and the glorius return to Boston. My 31st through 36th U2 shows dating back to 85 and, above all else stood last night.
If you read these reviews as religiously as I do and the boys are coming to town, do whatever it takes to get into the heart. It cannot be said enough. I tried through that infernal Ticketheister but got shut out of floor. After the first two shows, I decided the finale in Boston would be my time - a fan on eBay kept the price low enough so I got there and stood behind just two others directly between Bono and Edge. This, my friends, is U2 nirvana.
From the intro we knew night four in Boston would be the clincher - Pride as second song, 'Even Better' making its return. Between every number I yelled 'Out of Control.' And after 'New York,' the dreams of a 30-year-old following the boys since age 14 came true. That bass, that screaming guitar, along comes Larry. "Out of CONTROL!!!!!"
Thank you boys, thank you.
Then 'Party Girl' made the night. True magic. True magic.
I saw two shows elsewhere and all four in Boston - there is no doubt this is U2's American home. As Bono said last night, the town didn't sleep while they were here and the performances (HBO gaffes aside) were outstanding.
Kudos to the band for having the imagination to do the floor and heart as GA, it kept scalpers at bay and left the corporate types up in sky boxes. It allowed fans who wanted to be there the chance to get there - you just had to wait a while. It's that simple, get there by noon (later in some cities) and you'll be within the 5th row. How perfect for any fan??
So that's it, they left town. Onto Philly and New York, towering sights but second cities compared to the history and majesty of Boston's support for U2.
Bono all but said they will not be back here in the fall. I can't say how that troubles the Boston soul but thanks for the best week of my life - the best show since you opened my eyes at 14 and, of course, for "Out of Control."
Walk on. Rejoice.
