Saw the U2 show in Vancouver last night. Had not seen them since Popmart so it was kind of surprising to see the (relatively) stripped stage (although the heart shaped "catwalk" was coo)l. No matter, what they lacked in stage props they more than made up for with the most inventive light show I've seen in a LONG time at a rock show.
Setlist was excellent, perfectly balancing old and new. Sound was muddy in spots (mix seem treble heavy). Bono made a nice comment about how 20 years ago they played their first show in Vancouver at the fabulous Commadore ballroom (back in business after a several year hiatus).
Band was in good, not great form. Music was pretty tight, Bono's voice sounded good (although a little strained later in the show) but it fell short on passion of the best U2 concerts I've seen or the Springsteen/E Street band reunion tour last year.
Don't get me wrong, a really good show, just didn't blow the roof off the dump as they have in the past. Also thought with the high ticket prices, could have been longer. Two hours was good but (comparisions again) the 3 and a half hours that Springsteen did night in and night out last year was more what I was hoping for.
Still, better than 90 percent of the concerts I've seen recently.....
PJ harvey was also good but the audience seemed indifferent to her set.
