Last year, when I was 14, I began sewing a life-size replica of Edge’s beloved Gibson Explorer guitar. He has called this guitar the “sound of the band” and plays it for well-known songs such as Beautiful Day and I Will Follow. While preparing to go to the Philadelphia U2360 concert, someone suggested I bring the guitar and try to get Edge to see it. I thought finishing sewing the guitar might as well take up some time in the GA line, since I would be there from 5:45 AM.
My simple goal was simply to get the guitar acknowledged by Dallas Schoo, Edge’s guitar tech, during the soundcheck. With the help of other fans on the outer rail (thank you) Dallas not only saw the guitar, he stopped and admired it before finishing up the soundcheck.
And my luck wasn’t out yet- during the concert, while Edge was walking around the catwalk towards us during Mysterious Ways, he also noticed the guitar! (Again, thanks to the many helpful fans near me). He gave us a shocked smile and continued to grin at us while he walked on. Still looking at us, he then raised his guitar, almost in a salute and my heart must have stopped beating for a second. I must have seen it all in slow motion and for those couple moments, I was simply blown away that Edge had acknowledged my work!
My story doesn’t end there, though. He must have read my friend’s sign which said “Please come take this guitar!” because near the encore, his bodyguard walked out to us and started looking around our section. When we realized who it was we called out to him but it was too late and he hadn’t found my guitar, so he left. Edge must have wanted the guitar, or at least to see it up close, if he sent his bodyguard to bring it back to him.
I know it’s a slim chance, but I am hoping that somehow I can get this guitar to Edge. Please do whatever you can, such as write in to U2.com or simply try to get this wish more publicity. Thanks for whatever you do- I sincerely appreciate it. I’m just a simple U2 fan with a dream, help me dream out loud!
