Despite the fact that I saw this gig over 20 ago , it does not diminish the fact that this was one of the finest ones I have ever witnessed. The line up was quite simply phenomenal. Birmingham Reggae band Steel Pulse warmed things up and it soon became apparent that this was going to be somethng special. The Eurythmics soon followed and though my memory of their set is hazy I do remember their set going down extremely well with Annie Lennox at her most enigmatic. Big Country were next . I was especially looking forward to them after being blown away by their debut album The Crossing. Stewart Adamson`s (RIP) soaring guitar work on a gorgeous and an unusally sunny day in Dublin was soethng to behold , with the crowd pleasers going down a storm. Simple Minds were next and again a breathtaking set ensued. U2 and Simple Minds used in those days to alternate as Headline Acts on the Eurpoean festival circuit. Finally the main event and the boys didn`t disappoint. You know all the songs you can visualize what it was like , but listening and seeing Edge`s intro to New Years Day , and the Bono parading with his white flag and Irish tricolour during Sunday Bloody Sunday are images that have stayed with me forever.
Worth every penny and aggravation of a 24 hr coach and ferry trip from London. Phoenix Park was a classic .
