I was a little bit worried going to this show. Having seen the theatrices of zooropa and PopMart. I was worried that this "back to basics" set might not carry for 80,000. The intamte arenas of the rest of the tour fine but how would would it feel half way up the back? Can the band back for the "best rock and roll band in the world" title carry all the crowd with them.
I should have known better. U2 were simply amazing. Better even then the two previous tours.
back where the Unforgettable Fire was recorded. The intro tape included Thin Lizzys "boys are back in Town" whom they supported 20 years ago at the venue and the sweet tribute to Phil Lynnot with Dancing in the Moonlight.
The most memorable parts of the show was Bonos moving tribute to his Dad Bob Hewson whom he only buried the day before. He thanked God for taking his Dad away from his cancer and pain. Kite which he had been dedicating to his Dad in recent shows got very emotional with Bono almost cracking. The video screens displayed a pic of his Dad and Bono wiped a tear away during "One". The surprise inclusion of "A Sort of Homecoming" was great. Crowd sang along to pretty much every song right from the get-go. There was a 5 min fireworks display at the end while "The unforgettable Fire" played over the p.a. The show lasted a good 140mins. My friend Didn't like the slower tempo of Desire but I did.
Complaints of the Day was getting into the gig. It took us 1hr 30min to walk the 2 or 3 miles from where the buses dropped us off until we finally got into the venue proper. 4 security checks! It meant we only got in while Coldplay were on who were quite good even tho I'm not that mad for them. And we missed meeting up with mates at an agreed time and never did find each other. Mobile networks were hopelessly jammed.
Aside from that it was a top gig. Lucky me is going to next weeks too!
The Chillis were ex too! "higher ground" had us all waving our shirts in the air. Even some in the vip area! "under the bridge" was a big sing a long.
If u are going next week. Get there early! I learned my lesson. Start heading back up the hill to watch the fireworks and u will be out before the main rush.
Top gig!
