U2 has performed 547 concerts featuring songs from October.
October was the second album released by U2, released October 12, 1981 in the UK and shortly thereafter in North America. The bulk of the album was recorded between July and August 1981, at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. The song “Fire” was recorded at Compass Point Studios in Nassau, Bahamas in April 1981. The producer U2 used for October was Steve Lillywhite once again.
A famous incident in the history of U2, saw Bono losing his briefcase during the North American tour which contained early lyrics and song ideas for the album. The band had already booked time in Windmill Lane, and in many cases Bono was left improvising lyrics and writing songs on the spot in the studio. The briefcase was eventually returned to Bono in October 2004.
“Fire” and “Gloria” were both released as singles from the album October Any , in advance of the release of the album itself. A video was filmed for the song “Gloria” at the Grand Canal Docks in Dublin. The cover of the album features a photograph of the band taken at the same location, which is near the studio where the album was recorded.
The album was reissued in 2008, with a deluxe version that included a remastered version of the album, as well as a second disc of live and in-studio radio performances, as well as b-sides, and the non album single, “A Celebration”.
The original release of the album reached #11 on the official albums chart in the UK, and reached #104 on the Billboard 200 chart.
