At the end of the main set, Bono tells the crowd that the tour "began" in Belgium, a reference to the fact that U2's stages are built by Stageco. He also calls out "Smasher," a longtime member of U2's video crew who's from Belgium. Before "One," Bono says the show is dedicated to Sam Shepard, who died a day ago. Bono says Shepard "set my mind on fire" in the 1980s as U2 worked on The Joshua Tree. At the end of "One," he sings a snippet of Patti Smith's "Ghost Dance" -- "we shall live again," he sings several times. Smith and Shepard dated and collaborated in the 1970s.
