U2 has performed 555 concerts featuring songs from How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb.
How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was the eleventh studio album released as U2. The album was released on November 22, 2004. Recording of the album was a difficult one, with U2 starting the sessions with Beatles producer Chris Thomas, but unhappy with the sessions, U2 chose to finish the album with a variety of producers including Steve Lillywhite, Jacknife Lee, Nellee Hooper, Carl Glanville, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, and Flood.
Recording of the album started in 2001 as the Elevation tour began to wind down. Some of the material was used for 2002's release of The Best of 1990-2000 as well. A demo copy of the album owned by The Edge was stolen from a photo shoot containing a number of songs. U2 announced that if those tracks were released online they would release the album immediately. The album would leak online, but in its finished form after the record label had distributed promotional copies of the finished album, and not from this stolen copy.
At the same time How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb was released, U2 was also using the lead single "Vertigo" in a commercial for Apple's iTunes and the iPod. iTunes released The Complete U2, the worlds first digital box set, including all of U2's albums and singles, and a number of previously unreleased tracks, including versions of some of the songs for the new album as they stood at the end of the sessions with Chris Thomas.
Five singles were released from How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. The first single was "Vertigo", followed by "All Because of You" in North America. "Sometimes You Can't Make it On Your Own" was the third single released worldwide. The next single was "City of Blinding Lights". The final single was a release of "All Because of You" worldwide, except for North America which had already had the release of this song as the second single.
The album debuted at #1 in 34 countries including the USA and the UK. The album and its singles won a total of 9 Grammy awards combined between the 2005 and 2006 award shows. The album itself won "Album of the Year" at the 2006 ceremony.
