The last of three shows at Madison Square Garden marks U2’s 28th official tour stop there and their 30th overall performance at the legendary arena in thirty three years. Making it their most played venue, which Bono later mentions before “Desire.”
The show has a large contingent of UN ambassadors in attendance, including former President of Ireland Mary Robinson, as the Irish government has invited an ambassador from every country to the show in hopes of winning a seat at the United Nations Security Council.
Patti Smith — who is at the show — gets tonight’s “Beautiful Day” name-check, as she did at the previous New York show.
MacPhisto pulls out a Vanilla Ice snippet in reference to ICE, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the current crisis happening at the US-Mexican border. Bono, later, continues to alter the lyrics to “Pride” to reflect on the crisis as well.
Steve Averill, who helped give U2 their name and has designed all of their album covers, is also at the show and Bono ends up dedicating "13 (There Is A Light)" to him.
Other notable celebrities at the show include Bruce Springsteen, Salman Rushdie, Micheal Stipe, Heidi Klum, Adam Scott, Scott Aukerman, Logic, Edward Burns, Christy Turlington and Kyle MacLachlan.
