U2 has performed 905 concerts featuring songs from Achtung Baby.
Achtung Baby is the seventh studio album by U2, released November 19, 1991. The album was recorded between October 1990 and September 1991 at a variety of locations including Hansa Ton Studios, Berlin, STS Studios and Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin, and Elsinore in Dalkey, just south of Dublin. The album was produced by Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. Steve Lillywhite who had produced U2’s first three albums was also involved in some fo the production work.
While recording the album Achtung Baby, the studio tapes were stolen after the band had reportedly left them in a hotel room in Germany, and these tapes were bootlegged and released in a wide variety of forms, including a three disc set titled “Salomé”. The material leaked in advance of the album release and was the first album leak with which U2 had to contend.
The cover of the album was a colourful grid of photos by Anton Corbijn. The cover was an attempt to get away from the serious black and white photographs used on the previous two albums and singles.
Five singles were released from the album, including “The Fly”, “Mysterious Ways”, “One”, “Even Better than the Real Thing”, and “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses”. U2 embraced remixes during this time, and many of the additional tracks released on the singles were remixes of the title tracks.
In 2011 the album was reissued for the 20th anniversary of the original release. Unlike previous releases, the album was not described as a remaster as very little sonic tweaking had been done, as the band felt there was little need to do so. The reissues varied from a single disc reissue of the album, to an “Uber” release that contained six CDs, four DVDs, five 7-inch singles, and the album pressed on two 12-inch vinyl. A theatrical film “From the Sky Down” was released documenting the recording of “Achtung Baby” and looking back at the album 20 years later.
The original release of “Achtung Baby” was a huge chart success, and reached #1 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart in the USA, and reached #2 on the UK Albums Chart.
