U2 has performed 1144 concerts featuring songs from War.
War was the third album released by U2, released on February 28, 1983 in the UK, and the following day, March 1, 1983 in North America. The album was recorded between May 1982 and August 1982 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. Steve Lillywhite returned as producer of the album for the third time.
Once again U2 found itself up against deadlines while in the studio. The song “40” was recorded at the last minute, on the final day they had the studio available.
Singles released from the album included “New Year’s Day” and “Two Hearts Beat as One”. There was also a limited release of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” and “40” as singles. Videos were issued for both “New Year’s Day” and “Two Hearts Beat as One”.
The cover of the album once again featured Peter Rowan, reprising his pose from the cover of “Boy”. This time the cover was used worldwide.
The album was reissued in 2008, with a deluxe version that included a remastered version of the album, as well as a second disc of b-sides, live tracks and remixes. It also included a newly finished track, “Angels Too Tied to the Ground” and several remixes of “New Year’s Day” that had been completed in 2000.
The original release of the album was very successful, and it reached #1 in the UK, knocking Michael Jackson’s Thriller out of the top spot. On the Billboard 200 charts in the USA the album reached #12. Rolling Stone magazine does list War on its “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.
