U2 has performed 1135 concerts featuring songs from Boy.
Boy is the debut album by U2, released on October 20, 1980 in the UK and Europe, and in March 1981 in North America. The album was recorded between March and September of 1980 at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. The producer working with U2 on the album was Steve Lillywhite.
“Out Of Control” and “Stories For Boys” had previously been issued as part of the “Three” EP, but were re-recorded for the album. “I Will Follow” and “A Day Without Me” were also issued as singles from the album.
Two covers were used on the album, the one in Europe featured a young boy and friend of the band on the cover, Peter Rowen. Worried about the image a shirtless boy on the cover would give, for the later US release photos of the band were used stretched to add some interest to the sleeve.
The album was reissued in 2008, with a deluxe version that included a remastered version of the album, as well as a second disc of b-sides, live tracks and rare songs previously not released.
The original release of the album Boy reached #52 on the official album charts in the UK, and reached #63 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album has been included in Rolling Stone magazines “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” list.
