Tonight's show is the first second show in a city of the tour, prompting fans to hope for something new on the set list. San Jose is a city that's had some tour debuts in its past -- namely "Kite" in 2001 and "Original Of The Species" in 2005. The trend continues early on when "Red Flag Day" makes its tour debut -- a song that U2 rehearsed a day earlier during soundcheck. It's a strong performance and the crowd responds enthusiastically.
Tonight's "Beautiful Day" shoutout goes to Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. Bono does a lot of ad-libbing throughout the show tonight, especially during "Until The End Of The World," "Desire" and before/after many songs -- going beyond what he typically says during the course of shows this tour. His MacPhisto speech before "Acrobat" isn't any longer than normal, but he does change it up from past shows. MacPhisto introduces himself by name -- "My name is Mr. MacPhisto, but sometimes I pretend to be Mick Jagger" -- something he hasn't done yet this tour. He also says "I was there in Charlottesville with the KKK...."
Bono does a fairly lengthy spoken-word snippet of "Landlady" before "You're The Best Thing About Me."
As was the case last night (and in St. Louis), curtains are used to block off upper level sections behind the stage due to lower-than-expected ticket sales.
